as it swirled, thick and yellow-white, around them. It swirled around the trees, too, and rose like steam from the glossy mud and clumps of reeds that stretched away on all sides. As the minutes passed, it grew thicker.

At last it seemed as though they were enclosed in a still, secret world. A world of mist and mud. The only sound was the squelching of their feet as they plodded on. Before them, behind them, and around them swirled the mist, changing shape and direction by its own will, it seemed, for not a breath of air stirred the trees.

Then, to his left. Rowan saw something moving. Something large and dark. He slowed, straining his eyes to see through the mist that twisted and billowed, disguising the shape. The shape of—

Rowan cried out. It was Star! Star, heaving and panting in a wallow of mud that was sucking her down, down. The mist cleared, and he could see her rolling her eyes in panic, thrashing her neck from side to side in the sticky, suffocating swamp.

Without a thought he leaped to her rescue, ignoring Jonn's shout of surprise. He could hear her now, bellowing in fear, calling to him for help. "1 am coming, Star!" he screamed.

But the mud was sucking at him, pulling him down. He could not find a place to put his feet.
